The Mischievous Little Girl of Acoma

Instead of watching the turkeys as she was told, she played around and one of the turkeys disappeared.

When her mother asked her to find the missing turkey, the girl ignored her and even went to sleep under a ladder.

The next day, she found the turkey nesting and warming an egg in a rock's hollow.

Ignoring the turkey's cries, she grabbed the egg and started chanting about going east to the water.

An old man passing by questioned her actions, but the girl stubbornly refused to listen and continued mistreating the turkey.

The old man rushed to inform the girl's mother, but by the time they arrived, it was too late.

The girl had thrown the egg, the turkey, and herself into the water, never to return.

Despite her mother's cries to the Water God for her daughter's return, the girl was gone forever.

As a lesson to all who hear, the tale from Acoma teaches the importance of being good and listening to those who care for us.
